Santa Fe Community College announced the induction of the following students into the Alpha Kappa Xi chapter of the honor society Phi Theta Kappa: Tyra J. Chavez, Charlotte Conger, Orlando Dugi, Valerie Hayas, Cristina King, Leslie Martinez, Aspen Montoya, Immaculate Nchanji, Ariel O’Brady, Johnny O’Brady, Taj Ortega, Aaron Ortiz, Elizabeth Paterson and Amberlee Romero.

To join the chapter, students must have a GPA of 3.4 and at least 12 credit hours earned toward a two-year degree. The average GPA of Phi Theta Kappa students is 3.8, and students contribute to the four hallmarks of the honor society: scholarshi­p, leadership, service and fellowship.

Current Phi Theta Kappa members at SFCC are Matthew Encinias, Jenna Rivera, Angela Luna, Judy Towers and Colin Maes. Andrew Lovato is the faculty adviser, and Jane Abott serves as the emeritus staff adviser.

Leslie Clarissa Monsalve-Jones of Tesuque will graduate this month with a Bachelor of Science in informatio­n resource studies from Emporia State University in Emporia, Kan.

Del Norte Credit Union has awarded $1,000 scholarshi­ps to 10 students to help with costs of the college of their choice for the 2018-19 school year. The area students are: Ethan F. Aulwes, Los Alamos High School; Mariposa L. Childson, Santa Fe Waldorf School; Matilde P. Jacobson, Los Alamos High; Benjamin W. Rees, Los Alamos High; Gabriella E. Rodriguez, Capital High ; Joseph P. Sena, Española Valley High School; and Emma E. Tompkins, Cherry Street Christian Academy, Los Alamos.

On May 13, Mary C. Bessone, a 2007 graduate of Santa Fe High School, received her Juris Doctor with the Class of 2018 from the DePaul University College of Law in Chicago. Mary also received her bachelor’s degree from DePaul in 2012.

Earl Smith, the New Mexico Highlands Vatos Rugby Club captain and president, is a champion on an off the field. His team is headed back to the College 7s national rugby championsh­ip tournament in June, looking for a third win. He also is nominated for a Life of Significan­ce Award for his volunteer service.
