Your word is “tsunami” — because that’s what’s expected in terms of participants as this popular annual scholastic competition. More than 500 contenders are expected in this year’s Bee, a huge increase over the previous record (293) that was set in 2009. The surge is due to a new rule this year that allows “wild card” entries to spellers who won a school-level bee but not a regional competition.
