E&G Baseball Academy wins its first state title, eligible for regionals
E&G Baseball Academy has taken a lot of strides in just three short years. On Sunday, it made history. E&G Academy went a perfect 6-0 through the United States Specialty Sports Association New Mexico State Championships at the Albuquerque Regional Sports Complex and won the 14-and-under AA state title with a 5-4 win over Albuquerque Baseball Academy Briggs.
E&G Academy won the game in extra innings, needing a passed ball to score the winning run. Ian Farris, the manager of the team and co-creator of the baseball academy, said it was the first state title E&G won. Farris said the win was significant because the team has only Northern New Mexico players.
“I was just really awesome for the kids,” Farris said. “For them to do that, it just helps cultivate what we’re trying to do here. It’s a great group of kids and I am just happy for them.”
Farris said the team was down in every single game but managed to rally each time to go undefeated. The team is eligible to go to the regional tournament, which includes teams from West Texas and New Mexico, in Las Cruces from July 4-8.
