Mescalero president declares state of emergency for possible flooding
Mescalero President Arthur “Butch” Blazer Wednesday declared a state of emergency on the Mescalero Apache Reservation because of possible flooding in the aftermath of the Soldier Fire.
By executive order, Blazer activated the Emergency Operations Plan that enables tribal departments to work in conjunction with federal, state and local authorities. The Mescalero Conservation Law Enforcement issued a door to door evacuation to residences surrounding Soldier Canyon, because of rainfall Wednesday. All residents were allowed to return to their homes a few hours later.
Weather reports forecast more than 3 inches of rain for Soldier Canyon and surrounding areas. Seeking higher ground in the expected rainfall area is encouraged, according to information form the tribal office. Roads may be congested with working vehicles including local law enforcement, state and tribal personnel.
Individuals were asked to be cautious and to be courteous to the personnel to ensure public safety. All tribal members were advised to stay clear of any water in low lying areas and to stay aware of the changing weather patterns as it pertains to Soldier Canyon and the Mescalero area including U.S. 70.
Class V fire restrictions still are in effect on the reservation. No burning, no use of charcoal grills and campfires are are allowed. Gas burning or electrical cooking devices are permitted within campgrounds and residential areas. Smoking outdoors is also prohibited.
In a letter to tribal members earlier this week, Thora Padilla, Emergency Management Officer, wrote that they need to be aware of the approaching weather system that may have a significant impact on the Soldier Canyon Fire area.
