Plume visible Tuesday from downtown Santa Fe was rising from Sardinas Canyon Fire southeast of Taos.
Smoke from the Sardinas Canyon Fire south of Taos on Tuesday evening sent up a smoke plume visible from Santa Fe.
The fire was first reported in Sardinas Canyon, 15 miles southeast of Taos in the Carson National Forest on Sunday afternoon. According to nmfireinfo. com, it’s burning mostly aspen, highaltitude mixed conifer and subalpine fir.
The latest update on the size of the fire was 85 acres.
As temperatures climbed and humidity dipped Tuesday afternoon, the fire shot a “huge plume of smoke” toward the sky, the Taos News reports. The newspaper said an update on the fire’s size is expected by Wednesday morning.
As of Tuesday evening, U.S. Forest Service spokeswoman Anna Bouchonville said, no structures were threatened and the Forest Service was not ordering any evacuations since the fire was burning in a remote area.
Forest Service officials say the communities of Mora, Chacon and Holman could be impacted by smoke from the fire.
The Camino Real Ranger District in the Carson National Forest is closed and the entirety of the Carson National Forest is scheduled to close Wednesday, except for the Jicarilla Ranger District, according to nmfireinfo.
