Warning — a new fascism emerges

-

People from Central America fled from the criminals that Donald Trump says are coming to the United States. The truth is that the good, brave people left behind those gun-toting, murdering gangs in order to save their families. How brave would each of us be if we had to leave our life and belongings behind and run for our lives to a place where we had no house and no job and might be put into a detention center while separated from our children?

The solution can be found in three places. First, do not vote for anyone who supports Donald Trump. Second, support anyone who wants to work with those countries in Central America to stop the bloodshed and bullying. Third, educate yourself with a new book, Fascism, by Madeleine Albright. You’ll learn that the methods used by Hitler and Mussolini to gain power are the same ones being used by Trump and the Republicans.

Liking the rodeo

Every June we can count on yet another annoying letter to the editor decrying rodeos (“Time to end rodeo days,” My View, June 22). My advice to those “animal lovers” is do not attend the rodeo and leave the attendance to the thousands of New Mexicans who enjoy seeing bull riders getting launched high into the arena’s air.

We have a long tradition here in New Mexico of rodeo, hunting and fishing, but sadly, there are many who do not enjoy these valued cultural traditions.

America’s ‘Hunger Game’

Our government thinking is tragically ambivalent. Our leaders would force a women to give birth to a child, against her will. They would then wrest that child from her, against her will. As a mother and grandmother, I can think of no more egregious assumption of my, and my child’s, right to life, liberty and pursuit of happiness.

Better markers

A suggestion to the city for improving driving safety: In addition to adding more signage as asked for by others, how about adding reflective markers to the islands built several years ago all over town? As a senior citizen who is fortunate to still be able to drive at night, this would make my travels safer and protect my tires.

Grateful for caring

If it were not for the quick action of my loving daughter, MJ, my head veterinary technician, Jackie Gallegos, and my assistant veterinary technician, Valerie Manges, I probably would not be here today. One morning in March, I did not show up to work at my veterinary practice. Knowing that I live alone, they knew something was wrong. Jackie raced out to my house and found me in a serious medical condition, my faithful dog, Toby, by my side.

She quickly called the EMTs, who got me into Christus St. Vincent Regional Medical Center’s primary care unit.

After more than two weeks in the hospital, I spent the next two weeks in physical rehab in Albuquerque, after which I was well enough to go home. I was able to return to work at the veterinary practice I love within another week.

I want to thank the staff of Christus St. Vincent for excellent care and the people at the Medical Resort at Fiesta Park in Albuquerque. And most of all, I wish to thank my family, friends, employees and the people of Santa Fe — I cannot say enough about all of the support and love I have received.
