Santa Fe New Mexican

Too complicated

-

I moved to Santa Fe in 2010 from the Cleveland/Akron area of Ohio, where tag and garage sales filled my every weekend. It was great to see similar signs in the City Different — until I realized how unreliable they are. I took a picture of one sign that had been up for weeks, sent it to some Ohio friends and asked them what it meant. Puzzled, they replied, “garage sale, of course.” I said that it actually meant that there was a garage sale somewhere in the general neighborhood sometime since the last rain. I don’t know if sales are generally bad but, for my part, I have given up on them around here. Here’s a suggestion: Put up the signs with clear directions to your home. After the sale is finished, go around and take the signs down. Too complicated? Gary Lee Nelson
