Day of learning to feature acclaimed scholars
Scholars whose writings have earned international notice will be featured during a Yom Limmud — a Jewish day of learning — on Sunday at Congregation Beit Tikva, 2230 Old Pecos Trail.
Sponsored by the Jewish Federation of New Mexico, the event will take place from 1 to 5 p.m. The featured speakers include:
Professor Joseph Skibell of Emory University in Atlanta. Skibell is the author of five books, including three novels: A Blessing on the Moon, The English Disease and A Curable Romantic. He has received a variety of awards, including a Rosenthal Family Foundation Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
Professor Avinoam J. Patt will discuss Heroes and Martyrs of the Warsaw Ghetto: Memory and Identity. Patt is a professor of modern Jewish history at the University of Hartford. His work looks at young survivors in Europe after the Holocaust and their role in creating Israel. He is writing a book on the early wartime and postwar memories of the Warsaw Ghetto uprising during World War II.
Vanessa Paloma Elbaz, a postdoctoral fellow at Sorbonne University in Paris. The title of her presentation is “Encoded Messages in the Jewish Music of Morocco.” She was honored earlier this year for her contributions to Moroccan cultural and artistic life.
The Yom Limmud event is open to the public, though seating is limited. Tickets may be purchased in advance online at www. brownpapertickets.com for $12 or at the door for $15. For information, contact ron@jewishnewmexico.org or call 505-920-7771.
