Do-it-yourself ice cream: YouTube makes it look easy

-

Whether it’s chocolate, vanilla, rocky road, pistachio or the perennial favorite Neapolitan, everyone has at one time or other screamed for ice cream.

And admit it: Though those frozen treats do nothing to help our waistlines or cholesterol levels, there is nothing quite as satisfying on a hot August day as a chocolate cone, a banana split or a root beer float with vanilla ice cream. And if it’s a premium brand, all the better.

But even better than that is making your own, where you can control the ingredients and enjoy the end product later on, knowing that it’s your creation. And for that, YouTube has a few video tutorials on how to do it up right.

“Homemade Ice Cream in 5 Minutes” (www. youtube.com/watch?v_Zt1EuIEhvw): The title says it all as vegetarian cook and kitchen hack expert Jerry James Stone shows how to do the deed quickly using whole milk, cream, vanilla extract, sugar and a bag full of ice with rock salt. Followed by a whole lot of shaking goin’ on.

“How to Make Ice Cream at Home” (www. youtube.com/watch?vooRX380Zklw): British DIY enthusiast Warren Nash’s quickie tutorial goes old school, covering the basics of making the custard base with sugar, milk and cream plus how to add flavorings. But make note: You will need an ice cream maker and some attention to detail to reproduce his work.

“Homemade Ice Cream Recipe (No Machine) With Only Two Ingredients” (www.youtube.com/ watch?vj70yTq2ysLQ): It doesn’t get any simpler than this as Gemma Stafford of “Gemma’s Bigger Bolder Baking” shows how to make ice cream using only cream, condensed milk, whatever flavoring you choose and a hand mixer. “Did Somebody Say ICE CREAM?” (www. youtube.com/watch?vXtMlF7dHpNM): The culinary digital presence So Yummy comes forth with this slick and imaginative 11-minute video that shows how to make ice creams, popsicles, cones and other summer treats using unlikely ingredients and a variety of items found around the home, such as ice trays and balloons. Food, literally and figuratively, for thought.

“Giant Ice Cream Sandwich” (www.youtube. com/watch?vhtvZ7qaB1Gc): Jenn Johns from CookiesCupcakesAndCardio.com does everything from scratch in this tutorial in which she bakes two small chocolate cakes and sandwiches with a circular slab of her homemade vanilla ice cream in between, finished off with sprinkles on the outside. Try not to be enticed.

“Rainbow Ice Cream Cake Recipe” (www. youtube.com/watch?vBlVaAGx47wY): If you’re more ambitious, this colorful concoction also from CookiesCupcakesAndCardio.com employs a variety of ingredients including vanilla ice cream, maraschino cherries, colored gel paste and sprinkles. The video covers only the basics so you’ll want to check out the recipe on the same page.
