From the Santa Fe New Mexican:

Aug. 19, 1918: A community kitchen was opened here yesterday afternoon under the direct supervision of Mrs. Ruth C. Miller, state chairman for home economics of the women’s committee. The kitchen and equipment was installed on an automobile truck and placed in the Santa Fe club’s yard, but as this was found not to be successful, owing to the wind, it was decided to accept the offer of the Elks’ club of the use of their kitchen, and for the balance of the week the community kitchen will be held at the Elks’ club house beginning every afternoon at 2 p.m.

Aug. 19, 1968: Tom Popejoy, recently retired University of New Mexico president, has been elected chairman of the St. John’s College Western Consolidation Campaign Committee.

The announcement came from Dr. Richard D. Weigle, president of St. John’s of Santa Fe and Annapolis, Md.

Aug. 19, 1993: Santa Fe Mayor Sam Pick said Tuesday he’s angry with local hotels that rent space during Indian Market to vendors who are not participants in the event sponsored by the Southwestern Association for Indian Arts.

Pick said the hotels will cheapen this weekend’s Indian Market because people who come to Santa Fe for the market — the biggest tourist event of the year — may not be able to distinguish between what is officially part of the market and what is not.
