Athletics move into tie in AL West

OAKLAND, Calif. — Trevor Cahill pitched one-hit ball for seven shutout innings and the Oakland Athletics, far behind in the AL West standings earlier this summer, tied Houston for the division lead by beating the Astros 7-1 Saturday.

Khris Davis, Matt Olson, Josh Phegley and Stephen Piscotty each hit two of Oakland’s team record-tying eight doubles as the A’s won for the sixth time in seven games.

The Athletics trailed the defending World Series champion Astros by 11½ games on June 24 and were still 10 out on July 10.

ROCKIES 5, BRAVES 3, 10 INNINGS

In Atlanta, Colorado struck for three runs with two outs in the ninth inning, and then DJ LeMahieu homered over the center field wall in the 10th to help beat the Braves.

YANKEES 11, BLUE JAYS 6

In New York, Giancarlo Stanton hit one of the Yankees’ four homers, and Luis Severino struck out eight while pitching into the sixth inning.

Didi Gregorius, Miguel Andujar and Greg Bird also connected as New York moved 31 games over .500, matching a season high.

Andujar had three hits and three RBIs, and Gregorius also drove in three runs.

CARDINALS 7, BREWERS 2

In St. Louis, Marcell Ozuna homered, Miles Mikolas tossed six effective innings and the Cardinals beat Milwaukee to slide into position for the second NL wild card.

St. Louis moved a half-game ahead of Milwaukee and within four of the first-place Chicago Cubs in the NL Central.

METS 3, PHILLIES 1

In Philadelph­ia, Mets ace Jacob deGrom pitched his first complete game of the season and lowered his major league-leading ERA to 1.71.

DeGrom (8-7) allowed only an unearned run, the result of his own error. He struck out nine and walked none.

RED SOX 5, RAYS 2

In Boston, David Price pitched seven solid innings, J.D. Martinez hit his major leaguelead­ing 38th homer, and the Red Sox jumped to a quick lead to beat Tampa Bay for its 17th victory in 20 games. Mitch Moreland added an RBI double during Boston’s four-run first inning. The Red Sox improved to a season-high 52 games over .500 and maintained their 10½-game lead over the second-place Yankees in the AL East.

MARLINS 7, NATIONALS 5, 10 INNINGS

In Washington, Isaac Galloway hit a two-run single in the 10th inning, JT Riddle homered and drove in four runs and Miami beat Washington.

The Nationals intentiona­lly walked Riddle to load the bases with two outs in the 10th. Galloway delivered with a hit to center off Koda Glover (0-2).

ORIOLES 4, INDIANS 2

In Cleveland, Alex Cobb pitched a five-hitter for his first complete game in five years, and Baltimore snapped Cleveland’s six-game win streak.

PIRATES 3, CUBS 1

In Pittsburgh, Joe Musgrove cruised through seven innings, and the Pirates beat Chicago to snap a five-game skid.

Musgrove (5-7) allowed one run on five hits with seven strikeouts.

He has gone seven innings and surrendere­d two runs or fewer in four of his past five starts.

PADRES 7, DIAMONDBAC­KS 6

In San Diego, Christian Villanueva had a walkoff pinch-hit single in the ninth inning, and the Padres beat Arizona to end a five-game skid.

Travis Jankowski led off the ninth with a walk against Andrew Chafin (1-4) and advanced to second on a groundout by Eric Hosmer.

REDS 7, GIANTS 1

In Cincinnati, Matt Harvey took a no-hit try into the sixth inning, Jose Peraza and Dilson Herrera backed him with home runs and the the Reds dominated Madison Bumgarner and San Francisco.

ROYALS 3, WHITE SOX 1

In Chicago, Alex Gordon homered, Jorge Bonifacio had a go-ahead RBI single in the decisive sixth inning, and Kansas City rallied past the White Sox.

TIGERS 7, TWINS 5

In Minneapoli­s, Mikie Mahtook hit a tiebreakin­g three-run homer in the fifth inning, rookie Ryan Carpenter earned his first big league win and Detroit beat the Twins.

ISOTOPES 6, RIVER CATS 2

In Albuquerqu­e, Raimel Tapia homered and doubled, scoring a couple of runs while also driving home two as the Isotopes topped the Sacramento River Cats.

Stephen Cardullo tripled and doubled with two runs for Albuquerqu­e. With the game tied 1-1, the Isotopes took the lead for good with four runs in the second inning.
