Thinks “Stand By Governor” As Applicable As “Stand By President”: Platform Based on Non-Horse-Swapping In Middle Of Stream.

Aug. 20, 1968: Sen. Clinton P. Anderson, D-N.M., is worried about taking land away from the U.S. Forest Service, including Blue Lake near Taos.

Anderson said he thought that when hearings are held next month to restore Blue Lake to the Taos Indian Pueblo “and testimony fully developed, it will indicate that not only the Forest Service but a great many conservation-minded individuals do not feel that the title of this area should be transferred to the Interior Department away from the Forest Service.”

Aug. 20, 1993: The winner of the best-of-show competition at the 1992 Indian market will not take part in any of this year’s competitions tonight because of complaints that the same artists win every year.

Joyce Growing Thunder Fogarty, who also won bestof-show in 1985 and 1988, said she wants to avoid controversy.

“I wasn’t trying to hurt anybody or be greedy,” Fogarty said, referring to last year’s award. “I want to kind of relax (this year). I don’t want to scare anyone.”

After last year’s best-of-show competition, a number of judges said the contest should be changed, or eliminated because a small number of artists tend to dominate it. Some questioned whether it made sense to compare different art forms in the best-of-show category.
