Roster changes don’t hamper Prep in win

S.F. Prep 6 Taos 0

A new era arrived at Santa Fe Prep. It just wasn’t expected. As the Blue Griffins welcomed back Hayden Colfax in a 6-0 nondistrict win over Taos on Thursday afternoon at Sun Mountain Field, they also said farewell to last year’s leading scorer Anna Swanson. The sophomore forward transferred earlier this month, taking away a 48-goal scorer who was essential to a run to the Class 1A-4A semifinals last fall. Prep had not played since a 3-0 loss at Los Alamos on Aug. 25. No problem. Just insert Lynn Robey. The senior had a hat trick and assisted on a pair of goals, including Colfax’s first to open the scoring in the first half. Prep head coach Steph Coppola lauded the play of Robey, Colfax and Blake Trevisani, who scored to open the second half to take a 4-0 lead.

“They played beautifully as a midfield trio,” Coppola wrote in a text. “[Prep goalkeeper] Lark O’Hora played in goal and was stellar. … It was a very fun game to watch.” O’Hora had five saves. The Blue Griffins (2-1) head to Sandia Park to take on East Mountain at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Taos fell to 3-2-1.

LOS ALAMOS 4, FARMINGTON 3 (OT)

The Lady Hilltoppers consider themselves even with the Lady Scorpions.

After travelling to Farmington and losing 3-2 on Sept. 8, the two teams faced off again in the opening round of the Albuquerque Academy Invitational. This time, Los Alamos (4-1) came on top, as Alix Hailey scored on a direct kick from 25 yards out early in overtime to advance to a semifinal matchup against the host Lady Chargers.

Both teams scored twice in the first half, with Anna Matuszak scoring off an assist from Hailey and Alyssa Parker taking a feed from Leah Wolfsberg that allowed the Lady Hilltoppers to tie the score at 2-all. Hailey came up big in the second half, answering a Farmington goal with one of her own to the far post for a 3-all score.

BOYS SOCCER TAOS 6, SANTA FE PREP 1

A nine-day break led to some rust for the Blue Griffins, and the Tigers (6-0) took advantage of that — well, Patrick Penso did, in particular.

Penso had four goals and helped Taos improve to 5-0 in a nondistrict match at Sun Mountain Field.

Luke Stein helped Prep (0-4) get on the board with five minutes left in the match, but it was clear the squad was not quite running on all cylinders.

“There was a little bit of rust,” Blue Griffins head coach Hersch Wilson said. “We definitely played better, but we’re still young. We’re happy with the progress and how we played today. We need to learn to defende a little better and some more opportunities.”

Prep will try to get its first win of the season at 1 p.m. Saturday when it plays host to East Mountain.
