Horsemen can’t hold off Jaguars

-

The St. Michael’s Horsemen had the energy level where they needed it for a half Tuesday afternoon.

They couldn’t sustain it, however, and the Capital Jaguars rallied from a 1-0 halftime deficit for a 3-1 nondistrict boys soccer win at Christian Brothers Athletic Complex.

St. Michael’s got off to a good start when Justice Johnson scored on a direct kick in the sixth minute to open the scoring. The Horsemen (5-3-1) had several other scoring opportunities, but could not connect. Meanwhile, Isaiah Vigil kept the Jaguars off the scoreboard for the first half when he stopped a penalty kick in the 28th minute.

“Capital is a really good team, but I was happy with the way we played in the first half,” Horsemen head coach Mike Feldewert said.

Momentum swung the Jaguars’ way after that, as they tied the score in the 52nd minute then took the lead 15 minutes later. St. Michael’s tired for the equalizer, but instead allowed Capital (4-3) to add an insurance goal in the final minute.

“We just came out flat in the second half, and it just stayed with us,” Feldewert said. “Capital seemed like they had every 50-50 ball.”

St. Michael’s will try to change its luck against Taos on Thursday at Eco Park.

MONTE DEL SOL 2, SANTA FE PREP 1

Moises Cerda did all the scoring for the Dragons, with his second one coming in the second half to break a 1-all tie in a nondistrict match at Sun Mountain Field.

Monte del Sol improved to 3-1-1, while Santa Fe Prep fell to 1-5.

The Blue Griffins (4-1) continued their strong play, building a 9-0 lead by the half against the Lady Dragons in a nondistrict match at Sun Mountain Field. Blake Trevisani had a career day with four goals, while Lynn Robey had a hat trick to account for the bulk of the scoring. Hayden Colfax, Casey Chandler and Angelina Fredericks each scored a goal.

“The match was a bit of a mismatch,” Prep head coach Steph Coppola said, “but I loved seeing [Monte del Sol head coach] Jen Gutierrez out there coaching. So neat that she’s back in soccer and helping to build the program.”

Monte del Sol dropped to 0-8.

POJOAQUE VALLEY 3, BELEN 0

The downside to the Elkettes’ 45-minute, 25-12, 25-16, 25-11 nondistrict win over the Lady Eagles was that they had two missed serves.

At least they had 15 aces to make up for it, as well as a quintet of hitters with at least six kills. Oh, and Alyssa Rodriguez had eight aces among her 18 service points. Did we mention that Adrianna Quintana had 25 assists?

“It started out very well,” Elkettes head coach Joe Rodriguez said. “We had Belen out of system all night. I think almost all of their points came off of our side-outs.”

Ashten Martinez led the hit parade with 12 kills, Espy Torres had 10, Camille Cordova added nine, Makenzie Quintana added six and Leah Trujillo five.

Pojoaque moved to 6-2 on the season.

SANTA FE PREP 3, MONTE DEL SOL 0

It was a time to experiment for the Blue Griffins, who rolled to a 25-9, 25-4, 25-13 win in Prep Gymnasium.

Kiran Bhakta credited Prep’s success with strong serving, which allowed him to try some different lineups, which was needed since middle hitter Cocoa Randolph was out with an injury. Aubrianna Talachy stepped into her place and performed well.

“I think this is the most consistent serving we had a team,” said Bhakta, Prep’s head coach.

The Blue Griffins improved to 2-4.
