Horsemen show improvement in loss

-

As far as nondistrict-ending matches go, the St. Michael’s boys soccer team was happy with the effort, if not the result.

The Horsemen went to Taos’ Eco Park and fell 2-0 to the Tigers, the No. 1 team in Class 4A according to MaxPreps.com’s Freeman rankings, but St. Michael’s head coach Mike Feldewert was pleased with what he saw.

“I’ll take 5-4-and-1,” Feldewert said, referring to his team’s record heading into District 2-1A/3A play. “It’s good to see us getting better. Quite frankly, one of my coaches said it was one of our better games as far as controlling the ball and getting opportunities. We just didn’t get it in the net.”

Taos (8-1) jumped out to a 1-0 lead when it broke through the Horsemen defense at the 5-minute mark, but St. Michael’s held its own. The score stayed that way until the 60th minute, when the Tigers scored off a deflection on a direct kick. Feldewert said St. Michael’s had a shot hit the post and a few other shots went wide, but it was consistently able to get scoring chances.

“It was a fairly even [match],” Feldewert said. “[Goalkeeper Isaiah Vigil] made four good saves, and I mean good ones. I was happy with the way we played and the way we moved the ball.”

The Horsemen don’t wait long before starting district play — they head to Sun Mountain Field to take on Santa Fe Prep to open 2-1A/3A play.

CAPITAL 3, MONTE DEL SOL 0

The Jaguars (5-3) scored two quick goals within a minute of each other late in the first half, and never looked back in a nondistrict match at Jaguar Field.

Capital added another goal late in the second half, as Monte del Sol struggled to maintain possession.

“We were clearly outmatched by a better team,” Dragons head coach Fritz Rothdach said. “Capital was a better team and deserved to win. At this point in the season, we got a good assessment of where we are and we need to keep working on some things”

Monte del Sol fell to 3-2-1.

GIRLS SOCCER CAPITAL 5, MONTE DEL SOL 0

The Lady Jaguars (3-3) jumped out to a 2-0 lead and kept putting pressure on the Lady Dragons (0-9) in the nondistrict match at Jaguar Field.

It could have been worse, if not for the play of Monte del Sol goalkeeper Victoria Alarcon, who had 20 saves. Meanwhile, Adeline Chacon managed a couple of shots.

“The girls are happy because they played hard and didn’t give up,” Lady Dragons head coach Jennifer Gutierrez wrote in a text message.

VOLLEYBALL POJOAQUE VALLEY 3, BERNALILLO 0

How good were the Elkettes at the service line? Setter Adrianna only had 18 assists in the 25-11, 25-9, 25-12 win in Bernalillo.

Pojoaque (7-2) had 21 aces in 71 serving attempts and only had four errors. Elkettes head coach Joe Rodriguez didn’t even mind the errors.

“They were not on first service,” Rodriguez said. “We were getting three or four points before we gave it up.”

Espy Torres led Pojoaque with nine kills, and Ashten Martinez added seven. Alyssa Rodriguez had 18 digs to lead the Pojoaque defense.

Pojoaque gets its biggest challenge yet on Sept. 25 against Albuquerque Hope Christian, the top-ranked team in 4A according to the latest New Mexico Overtime Sport Center coaches poll.
