Don’t let Zozobra security go over the top
Burning Old Man Gloom was great this year. However, Kiwanis Club needs to at least double the number of security “wanders” at the entrance. Despite the number of gates, many waited 20 minutes to 30 minutes to get in. Standing in the rain and lightning was not fun, and I suspect, given the long line behind us when we got in, there were a fair number of people who didn’t get in at all before the burning (“Those burned at Zozobra will get refunds,” Sept. 3). Security may be important, but demanding the same level of security we practice for getting on board an airplane for every person attending Zozobra seems a bit over the top.

Protect SNAP
Congress should pass the Senate’s bipartisan, commonsense farm bill. It values the health and nutrition of our families by protecting the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP (food stamps). Nearly 70 percent of SNAP participants are in families with children. Others are people who are disabled, sick or have care- giving responsibilities. Research shows children who benefit from SNAP have better health and educational outcomes as adults. Investments in SNAP pay off. The Congressional Budget Office found that SNAP has one of the largest “bang for the buck” programs for stimulating economic growth and creating jobs. Tell the conference committee to reject the punitive House version of the farm bill.
