THE PAST 100 YEARS

Oct. 2, 1918: A score of Santa Feans who left on Saturday for Taos to attend the annual San Geronimo Fiesta, returned last evening. They report that about a hundred automobiles brought tourists in addition to those who had come by train and stage, while more than a hundred wagons brought the people of the neighborhood. The dances and races were

spirited and as the weather was ideal, the Fiesta was a success from every standpoint.

Oct. 2, 1968: Atty. Gen. Boston Witt ruled Tuesday Reies Lopez Tijerina and six other persons aspiring to political office on the Peoples Constitutional Party ticket are ineligible as candidates in the Nov. 5 general election.The attorney general issued two legal opinions on the qualifications. One opinion said Tijerina must be considered to be a convicted felon and therefore ineligible as an elector and candidate for public office in New Mexico.

The other opinion did not specify why six

other party candidates were not qualified, but did say an investigation by the attorney general’s office disclosed they failed to meet qualifications established under state law.

Oct. 2, 1993: Some Santa Fe city councilors are saying “I told you so” as they witness the city’s woes as it takes control of the Santa Fe Trails bus system from Laidlaw Inc. Mayor Sam Pick, who opposed the city takeover, said this week the situation should convince the council to rethink its choice to fire Laidlaw as the bus system operator. The city is scheduled to take over the service next Saturday.
