Lady Cardinals sweep Santa Fe Prep

-

Santa Fe Prep’s volleyball team went on the road and was swept in a District 2-3A match against fourth-ranked Las Vegas Robertson on Saturday night inside Michael Marr Gymnasium.

The Blue Griffins (3-9, 0-2) were a little shorthanded and lost by identical scores of 25-13, 25-13, 25-13. Robertson improved to 7-5 overall, 2-0 in the district. The Lady Cardinals have won five of their last six meetings since having to forfeit four matches for using an ineligible player.

Prep coach Kiran Bhakta thought his team had the momentum after the first game, but lost some steam with their serve-receive game.

“We can definitely do things well to take Robertson out of its system but we’ve just got to do it more consistently,” he said.

Bhakta said the Griffins are down two players on the varsity roster and will likely be short those two players for at least the next week.

GIRLS SOCCER REHOBOTH 4, MONTE DEL SOL 1

Fresh off their first and only win of the season, the Lady Dragons added another mark in the loss column with a District 1-3A loss to the Lynx on Saturday.

Monte del Sol (1-12 overall, 1-1 in district) gave up a pair of goals in each half but did manage to score its seventh goal of the season when Jennifer Madrigal found the back of the net. The eighth-grader scored in the first half to keep her team close at the midway point.

The Lady Dragons trailed 2-1 at halftime but didn’t do much the rest of the way. Head coach Jennifer Gutierrez eventually tried to bolster the defense in the second half by pulling defensive specialist Adilene Madrigal into a more offensive role up top.

Gutierrez said goalkeeper Victoria Alarcon had her best game of the season.

“She was fearless coming out of the box and had 17 saves,” Gutierrez said.
