Santa Fe New Mexican

THE PAST 100 YEARS

-

From the Santa Fe New Mexican: Oct. 14, 1918: Mrs. Alfred M. Beahrens, who has been ill with Spanish influenza at her home in the Tesuque Valley, was brought to St. Vincent’s sanitarium yesterday.

Miss Anita Bergere is ill with la grippe at her home on Grant Avenue.

Charles Springer, chairman of the federal draft board, has returned from Cimarron.

Oct. 14, 1968: The “Brown Berets” from Albuquerque invaded a state “community leaders conference” near Taos Saturday night and charge the University of New Mexico and Anglos in general with “racist policies” and “discrimination” against Mexican-Americans and SpanishAmericans. These charges were refuted by UNM officials and conference participants.

About 20 Spanish-Americans, including both young men and young women, “crashed” a study conference at the University of New Mexico’s David H. Lawrence Ranch retreat in the mountains north of Taos and demanded their leader, Gilbert Ballejos of Albuquerque, be permitted to address the conference.

Oct. 14, 1993: Even turtle trackers haven’t found Waldo.

Waldo, a 10-pound, 65-year-old female desert tortoise, crawled away from the Santa Fe Children’s Museum three weeks ago. Since then, the museum has received on false report that she appeared at Quail Run.

Like NASA in the hunt for UFOs, the museum has not received any probable sightings of the wandering Waldo.
