Oct. 18, 1993: When Yogi Bhajan throws a birthday party every August at the New Mexico Sikh community’s ashram south of Española, the guest list usually reads like a who’s who of state politics.

This year the emcee was Eric Serna, the State Corporation Commission chairman. Gov. Bruce King and first lady Alice King were there, along with Attorney General Tom Udall and Congressman Steve Schiff, one of the few Republicans there. Assorted other political players were in the crowd.

“Yogi’s birthday party is a must,” Rep. Bill Richardson, a Democrat, said last week — although, according to one attendee, Richardson wasn’t present at this year’s party. “That and their Peace Prayer Day in the summer. It’s smart not to miss those two occasions.”
