Disappointed, disgusted and angry — go vote

- DIANNA A. LEWIS Dianna A. Lewis lives in Santa Fe.

Iam really, really tired of being disappointed, disgusted and angry at the antics of the White House incompetents, the paralysis of Congress, and the impending selection of a Supreme Court justice likely to sway decisions hard in one direction. It seems to me we have blundered into a situation the Founding Fathers didn’t anticipate, one that tosses to the winds the balance of the three bodies of government that has served the American people for so long.

I’m disappointed that squashing regulations profits entities willing to pollute our air, water, land and to privatize public lands. I’m disappointed climate science is being ignored so we don’t prepare for what surely is to come, which already has begun. I’m disappointed that a major tax reduction goes, for the most part, to people who least need it. I’m disappointed that a health care law is being macerated to provide more bucks to insurers and less care for people. I’m disappointed that someone who knows diddly about education is making decisions that weaken public education in favor of charter and private schools. I’m disappointed that there seem to be no adults in government to understand that it isn’t possible to destroy, destroy, destroy rules, laws, norms and still have America.

I am disgusted that poor souls seeking asylum in our country are not only being denied entry, but also are being incarcerated, separated from their children, summarily deported. We are a country of immigrants. Has that been forgotten? I am disgusted that racists now sneak back into our lives spewing their abhorrent garbage. I am disgusted that the sale of guns is protected more fervently than the lives of the people killed by guns daily. Where is the line that should not be crossed? Where is our kindness? Our democracy?

I am disgusted that the executive in the White House disrespects world leaders who used to look to America for leadership, at the same time he heaps praise on true and would-be dictators. I am disgusted that his desperation for approval ties him to a TV channel that exults in helping him preen his ragged feathers. I’m disgusted that he can’t be bothered to learn anything about America, past and present, that he doesn’t read or listen to intel prepared by men and women dedicated to keeping us safe.

I am especially disgusted that the “leader of the free world” is a proven liar, cheater and unindicted co-conspirator; that he is truly nasty; that his treatment of women is disgusting and reprehensible — and that we tolerate this. What’s wrong with us? Why do we not look at these acute failings as ethical humans rather than as biased tribe members? How much of our souls are we willing to sacrifice for the sake of some temporary political advantages?

There’s all this and, unfortunately, more — a daily vomit of stupidity, nastiness and hacking away at what had always seemed to be America’s values. Put together my disappointments and the disgust I can’t shake, and you can understand why I’m angry, every day. How could I not be? Aren’t you?

I will not leave you without a proposal, an effort to change what we can. Vote, please, on Nov. 6. Vote for people who honor America’s values; vote for honesty, for ethical behavior, inclusiveness, respect — you know, the qualities that make you happy rather than angry.
