Santa Fe New Mexican

THE PAST 100 YEARS

-

From the Santa Fe New Mexican:

Nov. 11, 1918: Leo Stein, the artist, has returned to Santa Fe from Taos and will spend some time here before proceeding to his home in New York City. He was bruised and cut in the D. & R.G. train wreck near Chamita night before last.

Nov. 1, 1968: Preparations for the Nov. 5 general election are nearing completion in Santa Fe County, according to Pita T. Gonzales, county clerk. The normal election preparation pace has been stepped up considerably, according to Mrs. Gonzales, by the fact that ballots must be changed to include the names of several People’s Constitutional Party candidates declared eligible and ordered included on the ballot by the New Mexico Supreme Court after the ballots had been printed. Mrs. Gonzales said the names were provided on gummed labels by the secretary of state. The labels must be attached to each ballot individually by hand.

Nov. 1, 1993: MADRID — Back in the early 1980s — it was ’81 as near as anyone here can remember — Harry Reasoner and a crew from the CBS television show

60 Minutes came to Madrid to chronicle the resurrection of a ghost town.

It was an uplifting story, the saga of a self-determined people, many of them products of the ’60s counterculture who were attracted by cheap rent and the belief that they would be left alone in this secluded former mining village. They came with little and gave all they had to rebuild the tattered structures and carve their own vision of utopia into the foothills of the Ortiz Mountains. … Twelve years later, something has caught up with Madrid, although longtime residents might hesitate to call it progress.
