Transit Bolsters Economic Growth, Helps Local Businesses and Employees

- Simon Brackley President and CEO Santa Fe Chamber of Commerce

A strong public transit system serves as the backbone to a thriving local economy. In Santa Fe, many rely upon public transit to get to jobs, school, and around the community. For many Santa Fe Chamber of Commerce businesses, their employees use transit to get to and from work. There are people for whom public transit is not a choice, but a necessity. For many, the price of owning and caring for a personal vehicle is simply too high. However, with the use of public transit through the North Central Regional Transit District (NCRTD), these individuals are able to commute to and from work, allowing them the opportunity to improve their financial stability. As such, public transit enables a greater number of people to work and help our economy thrive. Without transit, many would be unable to get to their jobs, which would negatively effect both their employment and the stability of local businesses In addition to locals who rely upon public transit daily, many tourists utilize our public transit system, as it provides a costeffective way to see our city and support local businesses through shopping, siteseeing, and event attendance. Public transit is of great importance to local businesses and to residents who use this service daily. The public transit system we have in place through NCRTD is invaluable to our community, and it is up to us to protect it. We must ensure the future of public transit in Santa Fe to bolster our economy, support local businesses, and protect the livelihood and quality of life for regular transit riders. On November 6th, voters will have the option to reauthorize the tax that funds this incredible service. On behalf of our community, our local businesses and their workers, and all who need or choose to utilize local transit, I urge you to vote “yes” for the reauthorization. Doing so will not increase your taxes; instead, it will keep the current tax in place. At the cost of 1/8 of a cent, this is a small price to pay for such a vital need in our community. This November, a vote “yes” is a positive vote for the future of Santa Fe.
