Mya Kass, business manager of the Santa Fe Oxygen and Healing Bar, and Matt McDanel, owner of Saltary Ski LLC dba Ski Tech in Santa Fe, are among 10 small business executives who in October completed the U.S. Small Business Administration’s 2018 Emerging Leaders Program in Albuquerque.
John Garcia, SBA New Mexico district director, said in an announcement that the seven-month program “fosters a learning environment that accelerates the growth of high-potential small businesses and has a positive ripple effect on the economy of New Mexico.”
The program in Albuquerque is among 60 nationwide offered by the federal agency, which says the initiative has trained more than 5,000 small business owners, creating over 6,500 jobs, generating over $300 million in new financing, and securing more than $3.16 billion in government contracts.

Patrick Walker is the new managing broker at Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Santa Fe Real Estate.
The announcement of his promotion by owner/ broker Jim Pitts said Walker has been a licensed Realtor in Santa Fe for 35 years, the first 33 years of which he worked under the tutelage of his mentor, the late Karen Walker of Karen Walker Real Estate.
He chaired the Grievance Committee and sat on the Professional Standards Committee for the Santa Fe Association of Realtors.
Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Santa Fe Real Estate, which is independently owned and operated, became a member of the Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices brokerage network, operated by HSF Affiliates LLC, in 2016.
Robert “Vince” Smith, deputy state investment officer and chief investment officer for the State Investment Council, has been recognized by Chief Investment Officer magazine as one of its “Power 100” in 2018. Smith has made the list for the last four years, climbing each year to be named among the top 20 worldwide, ranking 17th among his peers.
“It’s easy to flourish in a bull market, but as we saw this year, anything can happen in an instant,” the publication said. “Throughout a swath of selloffs and rallies, these esteemed asset owners kept their cool (and their patience) to deliver stellar returns and innovate new concepts to their strategy as they rolled with 2018’s punches.”
The rankings are based on innovation, collaboration, talent development, fund size and tenure. New Mexico Education Retirement Board’s chief investment officer, Bob Jacksha, also made the list at No. 30.
Smith joined the State Investment Council in 2010. His role is to provide investment leadership for New Mexico’s sovereign wealth fund and other assets under management, a portfolio valued at $24 billion.
Tasha Martinez has been promoted to director of communications at the New Mexico Municipal League, the association of all 106 New Mexico municipalities.
Associate program director for the past five years, Martinez will continue to lead the Municipal Officials Leadership Institute, but her new responsibilities include production of the Municipal Reporter monthly e-magazine and analysis of proposed legislation on behalf of Municipal League members.
Martinez earned her bachelor’s and master’s from New Mexico Highlands University, where she also taught statistics, economics, business law and organizational theory as an associate in the School of Business.
She was born and raised in Albuquerque and has lived in Las Vegas, N.M., for 18 years. Prior to joining the Municipal League, she was human resources manager for the city of Las Vegas and library director of Carnegie Public Library.
Lance Hough and Moses Winston have joined the Modrall Sperling law firm’s Albuquerque office.
Hough practices in the areas of tort, product liability and class actions at both the trial and appellate levels. He has represented local governments and companies in an array of matters, including administrative appeals, environmental remediation, property taxation, land use disputes, business disputes and local government liability defense.
Winston practices in the areas of health care, tort and employment law. Moses has experience representing and counseling businesses and governmental entities in matters involving employment, tort and governmental affairs.
Prior to joining the firm, Moses was appointed to several positions in New Mexico state government, including general counsel and legislative coordinator to the State Personnel Office and the Indian Affairs Department.
Dr. David Grenache, TriCore Reference Laboratories’ chief scientific officer, has been named president-elect of the American Association for Clinical Chemistry. He was named president-elect starting in January. Beginning in August 2020, he will serve a one-year term as president.
The association is a global scientific and medical professional organization dedicated to clinical laboratory science and its application to health care. A news release said the organization is recognized worldwide as an industry leader in education and advocacy, as well as a facilitator for collaboration within the laboratory community.
