A Breaking Bad movie spun from the popular television series set in Albuquerque likely will be coming to the big screen.

A source with knowledge about the production said the recently announced film Greenbrier is the movie adaptation of the wildly popular AMC series. The source said it was unclear whether the cast from the original television series would be involved, but the discussion around this movie has been solidifying over the past six months.

The New Mexico Film Office announced Tuesday a Sony Studios production team would start filming Greenbrier around Albuquerque. The movie will track the escape of a kidnapped man and his quest for freedom, according to the release.

Jessica Mraz, the marketing and communications director for the New Mexico Economic Development Department, which oversees the New Mexico Film Office, said Tuesday she couldn’t say more about the production, declining to confirm or deny the connection to Breaking Bad.

Breaking Bad debuted in 2008 and ended in 2013. The story follows high school chemistry teacher Walter White, played by Bryan Cranston, as he turned to making methamphetamine after being diagnosed with terminal lung cancer and facing financial struggles.

The television series became a global hit and won multiple awards, including the 2013 and 2014 Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Drama, 2014 Golden Globe Award for Best Television Series and the 2009 and 2014 Peabody Award.

Breaking Bad also created a spinoff TV hit on AMC, Better Call Saul.

According to the New Mexico Film Office, the film production will employ about 300 New Mexico crew members, 16 New Mexico actors and about 450 New Mexico background talent.

“We are happy to welcome Greenbrier and Sony Studios to New Mexico,” New Mexico State Film Office Director Nick Maniatis said. “For years we’ve built up the film industry in New Mexico and strengthened our film incentives, now we’re seeing success after success for the film industry in our state.”
