Man faces two felonies

-

Police saw a man, later identified as 25-year-old Mariano Romero, run into the second home and barricade himself inside, the report says, and Romero refused to surrender to officers at the scene.

Around 5:20 p.m. police announced they had a situation in the area and asked nearby residents to stay inside their homes and passers-by to avoid the neighborhood. Deputy Chief Ben Valdez said officers were unsure at the time whether Romero was armed.

The SWAT team and on-call detectives responded to the scene and, after a few hours of negotiation, coaxed Romero out of the home and arrested him without incident around 8:30 p.m.

Police found surveillance footage that indicates Romero was the reason for the first burglary call at the complex as well as the report of a burglary in progress that prompted the SWAT situation, according to court documents.

Romero was set to appear before a Santa Fe County magistrate Friday afternoon.

Online court records indicate he has been charged in the past with multiple larceny and burglary counts.

In August, Romero was charged with aggravated assault after he allegedly pulled a knife on an Albertsons employee who had confronted him about trying to steal from the store. Romero was indicted in the case in September, court records show, and pleaded not guilty. He was released on an unsecured bond in October pending prosecution.
