Nov. 26, 1968: A Taos Indian fighting to bring electricity to his pueblo charged today that vandalism last weekend at the pueblo was the beginning of a “pattern” to discourage potential electricity users.
“We’re going to be harassed, we’re in for that,” Delfino Conchas told The New Mexican. He said he believed destruction of meters, power lines and about $1,500 in equipment at the home … on Taos reservation land was a deliberate attempt to discourage the bringing of electricity to the pueblo.
Nov. 26, 1993: A second-grade girl sits down at the lunch table with her classmates, holding her lunch in her hand. It is a can of Coke. A first-grader complains to his teacher at midmorning that his stomach hurts. When pressed, he reveals that he has not eaten breakfast and will not have much to eat at home until a check his mother is waiting for arrives in the mail. A high school student is eligible to receive a free lunch, but she is embarrassed that her family cannot pay, so she goes hungry. Teachers, principals and other education professionals say such stories are not uncommon in Northern New Mexico schools, where some children are not getting enough to eat because of family economics, peer pressure and other factors.
