Just visiting: Keep dogs leashed on hikes

-

Hikes in the mountains are more than walks in the park. If anyone needed a reminder, the image of a mountain lion gnawing at a cow carcass near a popular hiking trail — close to where a dog went missing — should do the trick.

The video of the lion feasting upon cow was taken last week near the Borrego Trail. Nearby, Toby, a 40-pound terrier, disappeared while walking off leash with his owner along the trail. Lily Azures, who tracks down lost pets, went with Toby’s owner to the trail. There, Azures saw big cat tracks nearby and put up cameras to see if she could spot one. Sure enough, a hungry mountain lion came down to eat.

All of which is to remind people to take care on mountain trails — wild creatures live in the forest, and they belong there. Humans are simply visiting. It means that the hikers, bikers and others who visit need to be prepared in case they meet up with a wandering mountain lion or even a bear.

After months of drought, too, it is important to keep in mind that animals are foraging for food. A carcass on the ground is going to be tempting to any hungry predator.

According to the Forest Service, hikers should take care: If they encounter a wild animal, make noise and try to appear as large as possible. Do not run. We would also remind owners that when animals are roaming looking for food, off-leash dogs will be tempting morsels. Instead of allowing pets to wander, keep them leashed and close by.

For now, take care on the trails. Hungry animals are abandoning caution and moving in — if not for the kill, for the possibility of something to eat.

The wilderness is their home, not ours. A human need for the outdoors should not put animals at risk. Keep your dogs close. Be prepared to talk loudly. If you see a carcass, be wary and consider turning back. Above all, stay alert. Because the wilderness can be lethal — especially for those who don’t pay attention or who let their dogs roam.
