Hosts ‘Spice’ up ABC’s ‘Great American Baking Show: Holiday Edition’

-

For its fourth season, ABC’s “The Great American Baking Show: Holiday Edition” will have added Spice.

That’s because when the competition series returns Thursday, Dec. 6, joining Anthony “Spice” Adams as host will be former Spice Girl Emma “Baby Spice” Bunton. So yeah, look for spice jokes and puns galore.

“It just writes itself. It’s something that needed to happen,” quips Adams, now in his second season as host. “So it’s great, we have fun with it and she’s so easy to work with, she’s so down-to-earth, she’s very approachable and she’s like the sister that I never had.”

As in seasons past, the show features bakers from around the country putting their best recipes forward as they compete in holiday-themed challenges with the title of America’s Best Amateur Baker at stake. Judging the final products will be returnee Paul Hollywood, a baker and cookbook author, and James Beard Awardwinning pastry chef Sherry Yard.

The bakers will be competing in an outdoor tent in London, the same one used for the “The Great British Bake Off,” this series’ U.K. cousin, which Adams says poses its own challenges.

“Usually when you make something in the oven, you’re indoors,” Adams explains, “but now you’re outside with all the elements. It could be raining, it could be cold, it could be hot, it could be windy. And you have to take all of that into account when you’re making a dish.

“But the thing is, everybody’s all on the same playing field,” the former NFL player continues. “It’s not like one person had to deal with rain or one person had to deal with the wind. Everybody has to deal with it and it’s a difficult thing to try to account for because when you practice it, you’re indoors. So when you’re out there competing, it becomes difficult.”

Adams got to taste the confections made in the series and even got to take a few home. If mistakes were made, he says he couldn’t tell.
