Police ID cyclist killed on Thanksgiving

Santa Fe police have identified the man killed while standing on Cerrillos Road with his bicycle on Nov. 22 as Barnaby Moats, a resident of New York state.

Though the driver of the Cadillac who struck Moats has not yet been identified, a Santa Fe Police Department spokesman said he is 17 years old.

“The case is under review still and charges pending,” police spokesman Greg Gurulé said in an email Monday. “No alcohol involved.”

Moats, 41, was killed near the intersection of Cerrillos Road and Maclovia Street. Witnesses say he either dismounted or was standing next to his bike when he was struck.

Moats was declared dead at the scene. The driver remained on the scene and spoke to police officers, Gurulé said.

Police said Moats was wearing dark clothing and did not have any reflective devices or lighting on his bicycle when he was hit around 6:30 p.m. on Thanksgiving.

Police had trouble identifying the victim because he had “a couple of IDs on him,” Gurulé said last week.

Gurulé said police do not know whether Moats was living in Santa Fe or just visiting.

In another fatality on Cerrillos Road, a male pedestrian walking northbound near the Quality Inn was killed by a motorist around 7:30 p.m. Saturday. Gurulé said that victim “had no ID so we’re tracking down information … no alcohol [involved] when it comes to the driver.”

The collision closed southbound lanes of Cerrillos Road from Siler Road to Camino Del Cielo.
