LUNA COLLEGE BOARD TO CONDUCT INTERVIEWS

Luna Community College in Las Vegas, N.M., is still looking for a permanent president, and the board of trustees announced it will conduct interviews with the semifinalists who did not get offered the job of president earlier this year. Though the board recently chose Bruce Moses, an Arizona college administrator who agreed to take the job of president at the campus, Moses withdrew his offer to serve as president last month, leaving the post vacant. Moses was one of five finalists for that job, so the board will now re-interview the other four candidates in January. In the interim, Ricky Serna continues as interim president of the college, which serves about 1,100 students on an annual budget of about $12 million.

MORE SCHOOL WINTER CONCERTS

Santa Fe Public Schools’ music department continues its in-school concerts this week with a number of holiday-themed events. Kearny Elementary School students will perform their winter music celebration at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in the gym at the school, located at 901 Avenida de las Campanas. That same night, students at Nava Elementary School, Acequia Madre, Sweeney and Atalaya elementary schools, among others, will hold similar concerts. The last concert of the week (and the semester) will be at 8:15 a.m. on Thursday, at E.J. Martinez Elementary School, 401 W. San Mateo Road. Visit www.sfps.info for details about the concerts.

SCHOOLS CLOSING FOR WINTER BREAK

For most schools and colleges, winter break means facilities close. This week, for example, most local colleges will begin closing or the break, which will last at least through Jan. 1, 2019. Friday will be the last day of school before Santa Fe Public Schools closes its 30 facilities until Jan. 2, 2019. Santa Fe Community College and its Higher Education Center will close as of Sunday. Some private schools will keep classes going into the following week, but most will be closed by Dec. 20. Check individual websites for closure schedules.

SMART BOARD TAKING A BREAK, TOO

As schools shut down for winter break, so does Smart Board, the weekly column of education briefs that runs oin the Santa Fe New Mexican every Monday. We’ll resume publication in mid-January.
