Lobos fall short against SDSU

Women’s team drops to No. 2 in Mountain West

A last-second jumper by Jayla Everett was off the mark, helping San Diego State’s women’s basketball team to a 61-59 upset of visiting New Mexico on Wednesday afternoon at Viejas Arena.

The Lobos (18-3 overall, 8-2 in the Mountain West Conference) fell out of a first-place tie with the loss. Boise State (18-3, 9-1) beat UNLV Wednesday night to slide into sole possession of first.

UNM trailed by as many as 10 points in the fourth quarter and rallied by switching to a 2-3 zone early in the final period.

The move worked, as the Aztecs scored just two points in the final four minutes. It allowed the Lobos to use a 7-2 run to make it a one-possession game after two free throws by Jaisa Nunn with 31 seconds left.

UNM then forced a turnover with 15 seconds to go when Jaedyn De La Cerda stole the ball from SDSU’s Zayn Dornstauder, setting up one final possession to either tie or take the lead. The Lobos worked the ball around to Everett, who drove to the baseline and took the final shot as the buzzer sounded.

Nunn was dominant in the low post for UNM. She finished with 27 points

and 11 rebounds, two blocks and three steals. It was her fourth straight double-double and 10th of the season.

She converted 10 of 17 shots from the field and all seven of her free throws, but the rest of the team struggled. The remainder of the roster combined to go 12-for52 from the floor, including just 3 of 26 from beyond the 3-point line.

It was UNM’s worst shooting game of the season. It was even worse after the first quarter as the Lobos shot just 26 percent in the final three periods.

Nunn was the only Lobo in double figures. Everett had nine and Aisia Robertson had eight before fouling out.

Sophia Ramos had 21 points to lead the Aztecs (8-12, 3-6), who were playing a rare mid-day weekday game at home as part of a field trip promotion for kids from nearby grade schools. The announced crowd of 4,272 was San Diego State’s largest of the season.

The Lobos return home to face Nevada at 1 p.m. Saturday in The Pit.

Football: Head coach Bob Davie added seven players to his incoming recruiting class Wednesday, bringing the final number up to 25 heading into the 2019 spring practices.

Wednesday was the first day of the late signing period for college football teams. The Lobos inked 18 players in the fall.

All told, 15 players were added on defense. Six are defensive backs, five are linebackers and four play in the trenches. The offense added 10 new faces, including quarterback Brandt Hughes and running back Chad Alexander. Hughes is a 6-foot-2, 226-pound junior college transfer from California, while Alexander is a 5-6, 164-pound incoming freshman from New Orleans.

Among the players added was Rio Rancho’s Dion Hunter, a 6-2, 220-pound freshman out of Cleveland High School who has been pegged as a linebacker. He is the only New Mexico player added; the entire recruiting class represents 13 different states from all five time zones.
