Days left in session: 29 Firefighter, save my dog: Thursday was the last day for legislators to introduce bills for this 60-day session. Some 100 additional bills were introduced in the House of Representatives before the deadline.

One of them, House Bill 598, is intended to give first responders the right to provide emergency care to dogs and cats.

Other late-filed House bills include one calling for repealing the state’s A-F system for grading schools, one limiting the liability for people who report child abuse and another establishing an elevator safety department to oversee, well, elevator safety.

Looking ahead: The Senate Rules Committee is scheduled to hold confirmation hearings for Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham’s five appointees for the University of New Mexico Board of Regents on Friday morning in Room 321 of the Capitol.

Those appointees are Kimberly Sanchez Rael for a six-year term, Sandra K. Begay for a four-year term, Robert Schwartz for a six-year term, Douglas M. Brown for a four-year term and Melissa C. Henry as the student board member for a two-year term.

The full Senate must vote to approve the nominees if the Senate Rules Committee gives them a “do pass.”

While Saturdays are sometimes quiet at the Capitol, the House Education Committee will convene at 9 a.m. to consider a number of bills, including a five-year literacy initiative and a childhood trauma awareness training bill.
