Meet the hottest emerging artists in Santa Fe. The Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA) hosts 17 booths for those who graduated between 2016 and 2021 in the IAIA Museum of Contemporary Native Arts’ portal on Palace Avenue. The market is organized by Tatiana Lomahaftewa Singer (Hopi/Choctaw), the museum’s curator of collections. “This market has been really good for recent graduates. For some, it has confirmed the direction they’ve taken with their art, since they get live feedback. The public can see what’s coming out of IAIA,” says Lomahaftewa-Singer. “We want to support new artists coming into the field with this exposure.”
Because IAIA markets have been so popular in recent years, eligible applicants are assigned booths by lottery. The exhibiting artists are Frank Andrews (Colville Confederated Tribes/ Diné), Justus Benally (San Carlos Apache), Leandra Chimal (Mescalero Apache), Carly Feddersen (Colville), Nika Feldman, Charine Gonzales (San Ildefonso Pueblo), Brenda Hill (Tuscarora), Kyle Kootswatewa (Hopi), Terran Last Gun (Piikani), Nicole Lawe (Karuk), Donna Martinez (Acoma/Taos Pueblos), Nicole Mitchell Lefthand (Navajo), Jacob Olascoaga (Tlingit), Golga Oscar (Yupik/Inuk), Emily Peck, Carmen Selam (Yakama), Tina Sparks, Anangookwe Wolf (Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwe/Assiniboine), Charletta Yazzie (Navajo) and Chad Yellowjohn (Shoshone-Bannock/Spokane).
Booth fees will be donated to the Native American Club at the Academy for Technology and the Classics. This charter school for grades 7 through 12 is located next door to the IAIA campus on Avan Nu Po Road. Funds will support the club’s guest lectures, field trips and other activities to help students better understand Native American cultures and histories.
