ARTHUR RAYMOND GOMEZ 1946-2022
Arthur Raymond Gomez was born December 5, 1946 in Cortez, Colorado to late Everardo Ramon Gomez and Bernadita Desales Valdez-Lobato (Verna). Mr. Gomez passed away Friday, March 11, 2022 due to a fatal single car accident. He was 75.
Mr. Gomez last lived in Albuquerque, New Mexico, He graduated from Durango High School in Colorado and went on to obtain his undergraduate degree in History and Spanish at Fort Lewis College. Further studies included an M.A. in Oriental Studies from the University of Arizona and a Ph.D. in 20th Century Western American History from the University of New Mexico.
In 1987, Mr. Gomez began his career with the National Park Service starting at San Antonio Missions National Historical Park and later retiring, after 30 plus years of service, as Regional Historian in Santa Fe, New Mexico. During his time in the NPS, Mr. Gomez wrote numerous articles written for professional publications and was the author or co-author of several published books.
Mr. Gomez served in the U.S. Air Force from 1970 to 1974.He was stationed at Kadena A.F.B. in Okinawa, Japan. He served as an aerial linguist intercepting and interpreting Mandarin Chinese communications during the Vietnam War.
Mr. Gomez is survived by his wife of 32 years, Christine Penelope Taylor (Penny), sister Cynthia Ranson, son Paul Arthur Gomez, stepchildren John Caldwell and wife Marnie, Sally Horrobin and husband Matt, and Ellen Caldwell. Grandsons Max Mateo and James Quincy Gomez-Wright, step-grandchildren Cameron, Kate and Caroline Caldwell, and Oliver and Gregory Horrobin.
Mr. Gomez was preceded in death by his parents, two infant brothers Robert and James, sister Angela Marie Barry, and youngest son Christian Michael Gomez.
A Celebration of Life for Art Gomez will be held at 2:00 p.m. on August 13, 2022 at Del Norte High School’s Performing Arts Center, Thibert Hall,
5323 Montgomery Blvd NE, Albuquerque, New Mexico 87109. The family invites all who wish to attend.
