J. ARTHUR FREED

J. Arthur Freed, 92, died on June 21, 2022, in Los Alamos, NM. He was a longtime resident of Los Alamos, helping to provide library service for the Los Alamos National Laboratory from 1958 until his retirement in 1991. He was the Head Librarian/Group Leader of the Library Services Group (IS-4) during 1970-1990.

He was born in Los Angeles to the late James E. and Rose Freed. The family then also included his late, older brother, David. He and his family moved to San Francisco in 1932. Arthur always considered San Francisco his home town.

He attended the University of California, Berkeley, from which he received an A.B. in anthropology in 1951 and an M.A. in anthropology and an M.L.S. in 1956. He served in the U.S. Army during 19521954. He worked at the Brooklyn Public Library during 1956-1958.

He was married in 1953 for 41 years to his beloved, late Nancy Laubach Freed, and is survived by his brother-in-law, John H. Laubach, and his wife Marilyn of Shelton, WA, nephews and nieces, their spouses and children, other relatives, and many cherished former colleagues and friends.

Arthur was a long-time member, archivist, and a former chairman of the J. Robert Oppenheimer Memorial Committee of Los Alamos. He was an active member in several organizations including the Los Alamos Concert Association, the Los Alamos Council on Cancer, the Los Alamos Historical Society and professional library organizations. For these activities he was honored by being chosen as Living Treasure of Los Alamos in 2017.

Arrangements are being handled by the Berardinelli Funeral Home, Santa Fe. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at The Fuller Lodge in Los Alamos on Wednesday, August 24, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. Memorial donations may be made to the J.
