“The Way Back” (2020): An excellent Affleck plays a former athletic star who tries to redeem himself by returning to his alma mater as a basketball coach.

“The Accountant” (2016): Affleck has more than math in mind, and very effectivel­y, in this action drama about a numbers counter who gets quite physical to protect a whistleblo­wer (Anna Kendrick).

“Gone Girl” (2014): Director David Fincher’s version of Gillian Flynn’s best seller casts Affleck as a husband who becomes the prime suspect in the disappeara­nce of his wife (Rosamund Pike).

“Argo” (2012): Affleck won an Oscar as best director for this superb true-life drama, in which he also plays a CIA agent trying to spirit several Americans out of Iran during the hostage crisis.

“The Town” (2010): Leaping big as a director, Affleck also stars in this crime drama that’s stolen by Jeremy Renner as a short-fused member of his gang.

“The Company Men” (2010): A subtle, sympatheti­c Affleck plays one of several co-workers struggling to cope with suddenly being downsized.

“State of Play” (2009): Affleck underplays smartly in this adaptation of a British melodrama about a politician implicated in a murder probe.

“Gone Baby Gone” (2007): Though he didn’t act in it, Affleck earned big props for directing this mystery about those affected by a child abduction.

“Good Will Hunting” (1997): He was an actor in this drama about a secret genius, but Affleck gets even more credit for teaming with title star Matt Damon in writing the Oscar-winning script.

“Chasing Amy” (1997): Filmmaker Kevin Smith gave Affleck one of his first starring roles with this offbeat comedy-drama about a complicate­d relationsh­ip between comic book artists.
