THE PAST 100 YEARS

From The Santa Fe New Mexican:

Nov. 5, 1923: Snow removal on important trunkline highways is becoming a matter of increasing importance each winter, says the Bureau of Public Roads of the United States department of agriculture.

Investigations of the bureau show that there is a considerable mileage of road which the public can ill afford to lose the use of each winter.

Nov. 5, 1948: A.L. Zinn, attorney and Democratic county chairman, is planning to challenge the Indian vote in the First judicial district as counsel for District Attorney Marcelino Gutierrez, defeated in Tuesday’s election, it was learned today.

… “Since the supreme court has held that residents of Los Alamos may not vote because they live on a federal reservation the question has entered my mind whether Indians who live on a federal reservation are eligible to vote,” Zinn said.

Nov. 5, 1973: ALBUQUERQUE (UPI) — Syndicated editorial cartoonist Bill Mauldin, stretched out on a hospital bed because of back injuries suffered in an auto accident with two police cars, looked up momentarily and said “I understand the fugitive got away.”

He shook his head and said the whole affair was the “usual heavy-footed incompetence” displayed by police chasing a suspect.

Nov. 5, 1998: The Board of Education took a “leap of faith” Wednesday night and unanimously committed to a 10-year plan to spend millions of dollars bringing all school buildings in the district up to codes and standards — assuming Santa Fe voters approve a property tax increase in February.

The Citizens Review Committee, which has been meeting since last year, gave the board a list of recommendations for priority projects Wednesday night — starting with a new campus for crumbling Santa Fe High School, a new campus for Salazar Elementary and a new elementary school on the south side of town.

The committee also has tentative recommendations stretching into the year 2008 for a new middle school in Eldorado and hundreds of other projects.
