No. 17 Air Force falls 23-3 to Army

-

DENVER — Army wrecked No. 17 Air Force’s perfect season — and then some.

Nothing like beating a rival to salvage — or jump-start

— a season that hasn’t gone according to plan for the Black Knights.

Quarterback Bryson Daily ran for 170 yards and two touchdowns, Army’s swarming defense forced six turnovers and the Black Knights knocked Air Force from the list of undefeated teams Saturday.

Daily and the Black Knights entered as an 18½-point underdog, according to FanDuel Sportsbook. But they quickly set the tone with a dominant opening half in which they led 23-3. A stunned and staggered Falcons team never got on track in front of 52,401 fans at Empower Field at Mile High in Denver.

The mistake-prone Falcons (8-1) had four fumbles, threw two interceptions, missed a 32-yard field goal and turned the ball over twice on downs as their best start since 1985 came to a halt. They entered the day as one of eight undefeated major college football teams.

Army (3-6) snapped a fivegame skid and moved into the driver’s seat to hoist the Commander-in-Chief ’s Trophy. The Black Knights need to beat Navy on Dec. 9 to claim the prize in the annual round-robin competition between the service academies. Air Force can retain the trophy if Army loses to the Midshipmen.

SAN DIEGO 23, PRESBYTERIAN 13

CLINTON, S.C. — Aidan Lehman’s 47-yard field goal for the lead and Zamir Wallace’s second takeaway in the final five minutes helped lift San Diego to a win over Presbyterian.

Lehman, who missed a previous field-goal attempt and extra point, nailed his go-ahead kick with 2:50 left. It came after Wallace recovered a fumble at the Blue Hose 26 with just under five minutes remaining. Wallace’s recovery came, in turn, after a 52-yard punt by Ayden Corrales left the Blue Hose at their 1-yard line. Wallace’s interception deep in Blue Hose territory with 15 seconds left clinched the win.

Dom Nankil threw a 7-yard touchdown pass to Josh Heverley early in the fourth quarter to give the Toreros (3-6, 3-3 Patriot League) a 13-13 tie after the PAT missed.

HAWAII 27, NEVADA 14

RENO, Nev. — Brayden Schager threw two touchdown passes to Pofele Ashlock, Matthew Shipley kicked a pair of 50-yard field goals and Hawaii knocked off Nevada.

Shipley gave Hawaii (3-7, 1-4 Mountain West Conference) the lead, Dalen Morris followed with a 1-yard touchdown run and Schager connected with Ashlock for a 26-yard touchdown — all in the second quarter — as Hawaii took a 17-0 lead into halftime.

Sean Dollars had two short touchdown runs in the third quarter for Nevada (2-7, 2-3), but Schager answered the first score with a 5-yard scoring toss to Ashlock and the Rainbow Warriors led 24-14 heading to the final quarter. Shipley’s second long field goal came early in the fourth quarter and capped the scoring.

Schager completed 21 of 38 passes for 203 yards for Hawaii. He also rushed for 49 yards on 11 carries.

Ashlock finished with nine catches for 87 yards.

WYOMING 24, COLORADO STATE 15

LARAMIE, Wyo. — Andrew Peasley threw two touchdown passes, Harrison Waylee topped 100 yards on the ground and Wyoming became bowl-eligible with a victory over Colorado State on Friday night.

John Hoyland kicked a 30-yard, first-quarter field goal and Peasley connected with Gunner Gentry for a 9-yard touchdown 26 seconds into the second quarter to give Wyoming (6-3, 3-2 Mountain West Conference) a 10-0 lead.

Brayden Fowler-Nicolosi threw an 18-yard touchdown pass to Louis Brown IV midway through the quarter to get Colorado State (3-6, 1-4) within three points at halftime.

Peasley hit Ayir Asante for an 11-yard score, Sam Scott added a 6-yard touchdown run with 68 seconds left and the Cowboys upped their advantage to 24-7 heading to the final quarter.
