June Carter Cash takes center stage in new documentary

- BY CAROLINE COLLACUTT

Delve into the world of “Dixie Darling” June Carter Cash, as “June” premieres Tuesday, Jan. 16, on Paramount+.

From Emmy-winning director Kristen Vaurio (“Going Clear: Scientology & the Prison of Belief,” 2018), this documentary promises to feature never-before-seen archival material from Carter Cash herself — including iconic moments from her outstanding career, and interviews with the artist herself, alongside conversations with family, friends and celebrity admirers, such as Dolly Parton (“9 to 5 and Odd Jobs,” 1980), Reese Witherspoon (“Big Little Lies”) and Willie Nelson (“Always On My Mind,” 1982).

“The five-time Grammy Award-winning singer, comedian, musician, actor and author has opened for Elvis [“Blue Hawaii”], appeared onscreen with Robert Duvall [“Tender Mercies,” 1983] and Jane Seymour [“Somewhere in Time,” 1980] and co-wrote one of the most recognizable country songs of all time, ‘Ring of Fire.’ Perhaps at times overshadowed by her iconic husband Johnny Cash [“Ride This Train”],” says Paramount, “she now takes center stage.” Beginning with the story of one transformative artist, the documentary also explores the history and evolution of country music, spotlighting, for one, the mark the Carter and Cash families made on the genre.

“June was a star of television and music from an early age — decades before she became ‘Mrs. Johnny Cash,’” said Carlene Carter, June’s oldest daughter, when asked about the release of the upcoming film. “Steeped in the legacy of the Carter Family and as a solo artist, she always was — and, as seen through this film — always will remain a shining star in her own right. While some may not fully be aware of her many talents, influence and just how much she mattered as an entertainer, this lovely documentary offers clear insight for everyone to see the true character and the joy shared.”

John Carter Cash, the only son of the late June and Johnny Cash, added: “I am thrilled to share the full story of my mother’s life with the world. Thank you to Sony Music Entertainment and Sandbox Productions for finding a place for it to live and to Paramount+ for giving it a home.”

Produced by Sandbox Productions, Sony Music Entertainment and Maxine Productions, June Carter Cash’s impressive legacy continues, as “June” premieres Tuesday, Jan. 16, on Paramount+.
