THE PAST 100 YEARS
From The Santa Fe New Mexican:
April 8, 1924: New Mexico Calves Still Isolated At Denver Yards
Not Yet Officially Determined Whether They Have Foot-andMouth Plague.
April 8, 1949: Albuquerque, April 8 (UP) — Newspaper reporters failed today to find Mrs. Ruben Lopez who became the object of their quest when they learned she had given birth to 35 children.
Mrs. Lopez had moved from the last address on file in the Bernalillo county health office, leaving no forwarding address. The 35th child was born in 1947. At that time eight were living.
April 8, 1974: State Personnel Officer Jerry Manzagol said today he has dismissed Sam E. Romero, an accountant with the Public Service Careers Program, for “irregularities” in cashing checks made out to various suppliers of goods and services to the Personnel Dept.
State Auditor Frank Olmstead, whom Manzagol called in to audit the three accounts in question, said about $1,000 is involved, mostly federal funds.
April 8, 1999: In a whirlwind of administration decision-making, Santa Fe Superintendent Edward Lee Vargas quit his post Wednesday night and a new superintendent was named for Santa Fe Public Schools.
Vargas resigned Wednesday night to accept a job with the Ysleta Independent School District in El Paso after the El Paso board voted 4-3 to hire Vargas.
Less than an hour later, the local board named Veronica C. Garcia, now the associate superintendent for school effectiveness in Santa Fe, as Vargas’ permanent replacement.
Garcia’s appointment is not official until the five-member board of education votes in an open meeting to approve her hire.
