With some changes, Rail Runner can be better

- Marcy Kupchella is a commuter who would like to ride the train. She lives in Rio Rancho.

I’m frustrated with the Rail Runner. I see the train as a great potential to personally save on gas, wear and tear on my vehicle, frustrations from driving on Interstate 25 day in and day out, every day back and forth from Albuquerque to Santa Fe. I can look for employment in Albuquerque, but I like my job in Santa Fe.

The only reason I would look for employment in Albuquerque is because of the commute. The train schedule works for some — obviously the current customers.

However, I just found out they conducted a survey last year about possibly making changes to the schedule. I found out too late and missed the opportunity to share my input.

This is where my frustration begins. I contacted the Rail Runner, and the response of workers was that, yes, they did, indeed, pass out surveys — to the people on the train and to the people that are on their email list and receive their newsletter.

Isn’t that preaching to the choir? I basically begged them to reach out to the masses the next time such a survey is conducted. I’m not sure my influence is big enough for Rail Runner officials to change their minds and branch out.

The value of public transportation is immense. There have been so many accidents on I-25 during my commute. Unfortunately, some of these have been fatal. I cringe each time I hit my brakes, sneak a peek in my rear view mirror, pray and bring my shoulders up, as I hope the person behind me isn’t following too close and winds up hitting me. Then, there is the gas pump and the auto shop, the costs of commuting.

Can the Rail Runner extend its services to be a bigger part of the Federal Safety Transportation program as part of safety risk reduction? Please, if anyone from the Rail Runner is reading this, send out surveys to the masses next time, and make your survey counts. Solicit changes from the general public — potentially new riders.

I hate seeing an empty or nearempty train making its commute.
