Man faces charges after allegedly showing drugs to cops

Police say a car passenger unwittingl­y handed them a balloon with drugs.

LEOMINSTER » A Lawrence man was arrested in June after a traffic stop led him to unwittingl­y pulling a large quantity of cocaine out of his pants and showing it to the trooper who stopped the vehicle, according to police and court documents.

While on patrol on Route 12 on June 5, a State Police trooper saw a vehicle bearing livery plates that had a defective tail light and stopped it to speak with the driver, the trooper reported.

While talking to the driver, the trooper reported seeing a passenger, Samuel Bernacet-Davila, 34, of Haverhill St., in the vehicle was not wearing a seat belt and asked to see his identifica­tion.

Bernacet-Davila, while still sitting in the vehicle, told the officer he didn’t have an ID and wasn’t carrying a wallet to provide it, but began emptying his pockets, pulling two cellphones out of one and a large black balloon known to be often used to transport drugs from

the other, the officer reported.

Almost immediatel­y, Bernacet-Davila realized what he had done and tried to hide the balloon behind his back, the trooper reported.

The trooper asked Bernacet-Davila for the balloon, which he handed over without objection and was placed under arrest, the trooper reported.

After being transporte­d to the State Police Barracks for booking, a Spanishspe­aking trooper began questionin­g Bernacet-Davila in an attempt to learn his identity and suspected that was not his real name, the trooper reported.

Bernacet-Davila provided a Social Security number for the officer who contacted police in Puerto Rico and asked them to send any informatio­n on the person using that number, the trooper reported.

The result of the investigat­ion was not included in the report.

When the contents of the balloon were inspected and weighed, it was determined it was powder cocaine and weighed 174 grams, the trooper reported.

Bernacet-Davila was charged with one count of traffickin­g more than 100 and less than 200 grams of cocaine, according to court documents.

When arraigned in June, Bernacet-Davila, pleaded not guilty, was who released after posting $5,000 cash bail and was ordered to return to court in July for a pretrial hear-ing

He was in court on Wednesday for a probable cause hearing that was reschedule­d for Dec. 17.
