Stratton Players honor Cragin

Earns commendations, Lifetime Membership

-

FitC BUro » Stratton Players recently awarded Sally Cragin a “Lifetime Membership,” with citations and commendations from Fitchburg Mayor Stephen DiNatale and state Sen. Dean Tran for 50 years of membership and service.

Cragin’s first appearance at Stratton was as Dixie, a “no-necked monster” in 1970s “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.”

“My mother, Janet, played Maggie the Cat and won the Best Actress award from New England Theatre Conference,” Cragin said. “My brother, Hal Cragin, was in the show, and we had so much fun being bratty to our mom onstage.”

Cragin was in many other shows in Stratton’s “Junior Wing” productions and performed in professional theater at the 88 Dinner Theatre in Nashua, N.H., Playhouse 101, and then American Stage Festival in Milford, N.H. She was selected for the Cherub program at Northwestern University her junior year of high school and learned about technical theater.

“Though I ended up pursuing a career in journalism and became a writer at the Boston Phoenix, Boston Globe, Village Voice and many other publications, I was a theater critic off and on as well and helped at Stratton with publicity and program before returning to this area in 2001.

“My mother, Janet, was my biggest inspiration for pursuing a career in the arts, as she was for many others in this region,” she adds. “I’m honored to serve as chair as we begin our 97th season. Despite the limitations of the pandemic protocols, we will find a way to bring theater to our audiences and continue to create a nurturing community of artists and people who love theater.”

Cragin also writes Pet of the Week and Pet Talk columns for the Sentinel and Enterprise.
