‘Nomadland’ named best film HBO Max orders ‘Sex and the City’ revival

-

In a year largely defined by isolation and displacement, “Nomadland,” the wistful and melancholic film that explores those themes in its tale about a woman living as a nomad after the recession of a decade ago, was named best film of 2020 by the National Society of Film Critics.

Chloé Zhao, who wrote and directed the film, won for best director, while Joshua James won the award for best cinematography for his work on the drama. The film’s star Frances McDormand won best actress for her role as Fern, the houseless widow in her 60s who travels across the West in a van looking for a job.

Maria Bakalova won best supporting actress for her breakthrough (and headline-grabbing) performance in Sacha Baron Cohen’s “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm. The best actor award went to Delroy Lindo for his role in Spike Lee’s “Da 5 Bloods.” And Paul Raci received the society’s best supporting actor for his turn as a deafened counselor who runs a Midwestern sober house for deaf addicts in Darius Marder’s eloquent drama “Sound of Metal.”

“Sex and the City,” the landmark HBO series that ran from 1998 through 2004 and was later made into two feature films, is returning yet again.

Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis will reprise their original characters for a

new 10-episode series, HBO Max said Sunday evening. Kim Cattrall, the other major “Sex and the City” cast member who has repeatedly expressed her opposition to revisiting the series, is not returning. HBO Max said the revival would be called “And Just Like That …” and that production would begin in New York in the “late spring.”

Label drops singer after he attended Trump rally

Indie musician Ariel Pink has been dropped from his label after he confirmed attending the Trump rally that led to the violent attack on the U.S. Capitol.

“Due to recent events,

Mexican Summer and its staff have decided to end our working relationship with Ariel Rosenberg AKA Ariel Pink moving forward,” tweeted the New York-based record label Friday. (As of Monday morning, Pink’s page on the Mexican Summer website was still active.)

The announcement came just a day following Pink’s explanation on Twitter that he had attended the Washington, D.C., rally to “peacefully show my support for the president.”

“i attended the rally on the white house lawn and went back to hotel and took a nap. case closed,” he tweeted Thursday.

Though Pink confirmed he had attended the rally protesting the presidential election results, he denied being part of the mob that stormed the Capitol as Congress was conducting the formal process of certifying President-elect Joe Biden’s win over President Donald Trump.

Pink, born Ariel Marcus Rosenberg, has been public about his support of Trump and encouraged people to vote for him before last week’s violent events.

“Im not maga,” Pink tweeted in December, responding to a Twitter user questioning his support of the president. “i simply think that trump is the only thing standing in the way of total collapse. the lying media psychos gunning for Biden/Harris presidency are more terrifying to me.”
