Sectional titles for golf get go-ahead

- By Danny Ventura

Most of the hour-long MIAA Golf Committee meeting Tuesday morning centered around the format for the spring tournament.

While there will be no state or individual tournament, it was full steam ahead for sectional titles. There will be no qualifying standards for teams to get into the sectionals but they will need to indicate their intentions by June 2. Unlike past years, there will be no qualifying standard for teams to meet.

As for how teams would line up if the field tends to be a bit crowded was a topic of discussion. One committee member

threw out the idea of keeping teams together in a grouping, a notion which didn’t go over well with some members, who felt there was potential for scoring issues.

Sectional team champions and runners-up will receive trophies from the MIAA. As for medalists from the sections, it was agreed if more than one person won, they would be declared co-champions.

Golf modifications were approved by the Sports Medicine Committee. The next step is to go to the Task Force, who will review it before sending it to the Board of Directors, who are meeting Friday.

As for spectators, the committee agreed that there would be no problem with each golfer having two spectators in attendance provided it was in compliance with EEA guidelines. Given past history with golf tournaments, the committee didn’t expect that to be a problem.

Dates were established for the fall golf tournaments. Sectionals would be held on Oct. 18-19 with the state championships going a week later.
