Two city men charged with beating a man unconscious

FITCHBURG » After police responded to a report of a home invasion on Harvard Street, officers ended up arresting two men and charging them with beating up a third man, leaving him unconscious and admitted into a local area hospital, according to police and court documents.

When officers arrived at the Harvard Street, the 19year-old victim had already been taken to the hospital for treatment, so they began questioning several men about what had happened, according to the reporting officer.

The men told the officers a couple of different stories about what happened, which the officers suspected weren’t entirely true, so one traveled to the hospital to speak to the victim, the officer reported.

Because the victim was sedated, he couldn’t immediately answer any questions, but later told officers that he was in the Summer Street area looking to buy some marijuana when a white motor vehicle appeared to swerve at him like it was trying to run him over, he turned around and starting walking in the opposite direction, when the car stopped and several men jumped out and began beating him, the officer reported.

The only thing the victim could remember after that was at least two people were beating and someone took the backpack he was carrying, the officer reported.

A detective then looked to determine if there was any surveillance video that showed what happened and they found two cameras that were pointed in the direction of the assault and recorded what happened.

One of the recordings showed a number of motor vehicles, including a white Mercedes Benz, pulling up to the area where the beating took place, the detective reported.

A large man, later learned to be Emanuel Ruiz, 24, of Harvard Street, wearing nothing but underwear was seen continuously punching the victim, and another man, later found to be Bryant Angelo, 32, of Harvard Street, also was seen punching and kicking the victim, the detective reported, adding that the victim’s backpack was in Ruiz’s apartment.

Both were charged with assault and battery and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.

Angelo was also determined to be driving the white Mercedes Benz with a suspended license and charged with that offense, according to court documents.

When arraigned on Monday, both pleaded not guilty, but were released after posting a $1,000 cash bail or $10,000 surety bond, with an order to stay away from the victim, according to the Worcester County Sheriff ’s Office.
