‘Ninja Turtles’ a retro beat-’em up

- Ty lieson CaCho, The MerCury News

Fresh off its success with “Streets of Rage 4,” publisher Dotemu is working on releasing another retro-style game inspired by a childhood favorite — “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.”

The big difference is that this isn’t the NES game, which was a frustrating disaster. This effort is based on the classic arcade games that swallowed quarters at pizza joints and malls 30 years ago.

“Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge” looks like a lost game in the Konami series. The visuals riff off the cartoons that ran from 1987 to 1996.

Meanwhile, the gameplay has solid talent behind it. The developer, Tribute Games, has staff members who made “Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game” and the “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” game released in 2007 on the Game Boy Advance.

Players should expect button-mashing at its best as players choose among Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael and Michelangelo and take the heroes through an adventure highlighting series locales.

Expect to see spots in New York City and Dimension X show up in the game. Being that this is Dotemu, players should find some modern touches and improvements to this beat-’em-up. Dotemu did great work with “Streets of Rage 4,” and members of the “Scott Pilgrim” team put in some smart wrinkles into that brawler.

As for enemies, players should expect cartoon favorites such as Bebop, Rocksteady, Baxter Stockman and, of course, Shredder appear in the game.

The project looks like it hits just the right spot of nostalgia, but it’ll be interesting to see what the team did to move the game forward.

Expect to see the game on PC and consoles. A release date hasn’t been announced.
