Alves scores six goals & adds assist

The Fitchburg State University women’s lacrosse team picked up its first win in over a year with a 16-13 victory over Salem State in MASCAC action at Elliot Field Saturday.

After Salem State (0-1, 0-1 MASCAC) took an early 1- 0 edge with a goal from senior Tara McLaughlin, the Falcons (1- 0, 1- 0) answered with eight straight, with goals from Nicole Kopacz, Kasey Allain, Mackenzie Ullrich and Julia Miele and a pair each from Madison Alves and Gabrielle Scibilia.

The Viking countered with a 5-1 run, including a pair from McLaughlin to cut the deficit to 9-5.

Miele and Alves closed out the first half with tallies to give the Falcons an 11-5 lead at the break.

Salem potted three of the first four goals of the second half as senior Kristen Bradley added a pair, but goals from Alves and Miele extended the hosts lead to 13-8.

With 8:08 to play, the Green and Gold put the game away with goals from Kopacz and Allain (Danvers, Mass.), pushing the lead to 16-10 before Salem countered with a 3- 0 run to cap the scoring.

Alves paced the Falcons, totaling seven points on six goals and an assist as well as three ground balls, while Kopacz finished

with two goals, four ground balls, eight draw controls and a caused turnover.

Allain notched her first collegiate goal and tallied three points, a ground ball and two caused turnovers and netminder Francesca Reyes made six saves to earn the win.

Falcon men, women soar at Bridgewate­r

The Fitchburg State University women’s and women’s outdoor track and field teams competed at the 2021 Bridgewate­r State Invitation­al Saturday in a non-scoring event.

On the men’s side, sophomore Carson Doody notched a first-place finish in the triple jump with a 13-meter jump and a third-place finish in the javelin, while freshman Nicholas Zeoli swept the shot put (12.63m) and the discus (38.71m) in his first collegiate meet.

Freshman Taban Manyok earned the victory in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 33:05.71 while Nicholas Sachetta topped the 800 (2:01.71)with Trevor Fields just behind him (2:01.71).

With a time of 51.14, sophomore Chris Morales won the 400 and a trio of Falcons finished atop of the 1500 standings, led by Brian O’Sullivan’s winning time of 4:16.11, just ahead of Sachetta and Timothy Sheehy.

For the women, sophomore Abigail Murphy won the 800 with a time of 2:31.49, while senior Brianna Young was second in the shot put (9.55m) and second in the hammer throw (34.54m).

Freshman Kailey Norton took third in discus (28.05m), fourth in shot put (8.98m) and seventh in javelin (16.71m) and Kayla Scarela placed fifth in the 5000 meter (25:55.66).

Softball team swept

The Fitchburg State softball team dropped both games of a doublehead­er to Emmanuel to open the season, falling 5-2 in the first game before dropping a 9- 6 decision in the second.

The Falcons saw Molly Grass and Londyn Forcier drive in runs in the opener, while Taylor Colvin had a double.

In the second game, Grass belted a tworun homer and finished with three RBI, while Julianna Savone plated a pair and Colvin added an RBI in a losing effort.
