City gears up for annual Easter egg hunt

- By Cheryl A. Cuddahy

» As far as holiday traditions go, an Easter egg hunt might just be the most fun. And in that spirit of having fun while still being safe, the City of Leominster is once again hosting an Easter egg hunt, however, this year it will be spread throughout the city.

“We have changed our typical Easter egg hunt to a more remote socially-distanced event that is being spread throughout the city of Leominster,” said Melissa Tasca, business development and event coordinator for the City of Leominster.

Leominster residents and businesses are invited to place an egg or an Easter decoration or decorations in their yard or business for people to see.

“The only real guideline for the eggs and/or decorations is that they are able to be viewed from the road or sidewalk — so be sure to make them big enough for folks to see,” Tasca said. “Decorations can be handmade, plastic, paper, store bought, or anything else you would like them to be. ”

Participants are asked to have their egg(s) and/or decoration(s) up and ready to view for 8 a.m. this Friday, and are also asked to leave them up until 8 p.m. on Monday, so the egg hunt can be enjoyed all weekend.

“We ask that participants fill out the registration form by Friday, April 2,” said Tasca. “We will then compile all addresses and create a map for families to use as they enjoy the Leominster egg hunt.”

Mayor Dean Mazzarella said the city is excited to be able to offer another event for the community to enjoy.

“We had record-breaking numbers of people during last week’s Pizza Crawl,” he said. “We thank everybody for participating and making that event a success.”

Mazzarella added that these types of events show that people are excited about doing things.

“We do things that are all socially distanced, and ensure all events are in compliance with CDC regulations,” he said. “We are committed to not just cancel everything like other communities have done. We are dedicated to offer events and we have become very creative over time.”

Mazzarella believes that if people in the city love the ideas, it will continue to create and support them.

Tasca agreed with the mayor, that events like these are a positive for the community.

“We know people are itching to get outside, and who can blame them,” Tasca said. “We have had a great response to this event, and I believe this celebration is a great way to get people outside, to enjoy walking around their neighborhood and downtown, and just to be a kid at heart.”
